The main objective of the Water Resources study in Attanagalu –oya basin is to formulate a proposal for overall improvement of surface and groundwater availability in the basin. This will be done by identification of the aquifers and their relation to surface water sources or transbasin transfer and optimal areas for infiltration, by a combination of desk study & filed observation of existing bore & dug wells and exploratory drilling of new wells. Through this consultancy assignment, the NWS&DB intends to formulate proposals in the short, medium and long term to improve water availability of Attanagalu oya basin to meet present and future water requirements for domestic and other users.

This training centre was constructed with the funds provided by Brandix Lanka ltd at a cost of Rs. 25 million, and was ceremonially opened by Hon. Minister of Irrigation and Water Management, Hon. Chamal Rajapakse on 28th September 2007. The Water Resources Research and Training Centre in Korakahawewa, six killometers from Anuradhapura is being conducting training and educational programmes on the ill-effects of the consumption of contaminated drinking water and on the use of cheap but effective purification and filtration techniques. At the end of year 2007 six training progrmmes were conducted for targeted groups in the North Central Province, such as PHI officers, Family Health Services, and Grama Niladari officers.
At present, the testing facilities of laboratory at the center are available to other institutions and researchers to test water quality. Also Water Resources Board is planning to conduct diploma courses on Groundwater Exploration and Drilling of Bore Holes, at this centre in the future.
